June 07, 2012, 5:00pm

Four star general, Joint Forces Command chief, and notoriously blunt-spoken Marine James Mattis was appointed the head of Central Command to succeed General David Petraeus at CENTCOM, which oversees all U.S. military operations in the Middle East and South Asia, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan. General Mattis, who has been nicknamed "Mad Dog" and "Chaos", was into counterinsurgency before it was dogma. Gen Next San Diego will have the incredible honor of hosting General James N. Mattis, Commander of U.S. Central Command the evening of June 7th. We will learn about the future of warfare and US defense from someone who is literally on the front lines.

John Yoo, Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law and Former Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the US Department of Justice (GNAZ)

June 13, 2012, 6:00pm

It has been 10 years since the attacks of September 11th, 2001, almost 20 years since the Clinton Administration criminalized terrorist acts, and almost two years since President Obama issued his first executive order, which stated that the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba would be closed within one year. Today, the facility at Guantanamo Bay remains open. The debate about how to classify those who wish us harm, and have acted upon, or explicitly expressed those wishes, is one that several administrations have grappled with. John Yoo, former Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice, has been directly involved in those discussions and has helped change the way we interrogate terrorists and the tactics used to retrieve information from them. As terrorist organizations continue to change and improve their methods of attack, the U.S. must be able to respond quickly and correctly in order to prevent further attacks from being successfully executed. Yoo will enlighten us to what he believes is the appropriate response to these issues, and how we can successfully fight off terrorism in the 21st Century.

Education Reform: Keeping the U.S. Competitive - Kevin Chavous, Partner at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP and Chairman of Democrats for Education Reform (GNSD)

September 13, 2012, 6:00pm

In his moving work, Kevin P. Chavous argues that children can and will succeed if the educational system provides them with the opportunity to learn. Chavous argues that poor communities routinely hire inexperienced teachers, lack resources, and pass kids along until they drop out. Once out of school, these youngsters quickly find out that they are unprepared for the job market. This, he claims, leads many young people to drift into anti-social behavior and turn to gangs, drugs, and unproductive lifestyles. In addition, Chavous will also address such social issues as immigration, bad neighborhoods, poor health care, addiction, and child abuse. Chavous believes hope for a better future enabled the children to achieve a better life. Chavous concludes that the need to strengthen families and to rebuild surrounding communities should be the top priorities for society as a whole.
