Paul P. Makarechian (Founder and Chairman of Gen Next) is Chief Executive Officer and Owner of Makar Properties, LLC. Headquartered in Newport Beach, California, Makar Properties, LLC is an innovative diversified real estate development company that specializes in the acquisition and development of innovative master-planned communities and mixed-use, resort, retail, golf, office and residential properties in premier locations and high growth markets. Devoted to community and investor needs, Makar aims to craft distinctive lifestyle experiences for each resident or guest while considering the integration of each project with its community and ultimately, delivering superior returns. Makar Properties, LLC has approximately $500 million in assets under management.
Paul manages and oversees all activities for Makar Properties including existing income properties, land entitlement and financing activities for complex multi-use developments, and the vertical development of industrial and resort properties.
Makar Properties aims to acquire distinctive properties with potential to be repositioned with vision and innovation. Recent acquisitions include Korakia Pensione, an exquisite destination property located in Palm Springs, CA, and the Hilton Anaheim, the premier convention and resort destination in Orange County, CA. One of Makar’s landmark developments is the St. Regis Resort, Monarch Beach, a 172-acre luxury coastal resort in Dana Point featuring 400 rooms and suites completed in 2001.
Paul previously served as Executive Vice President in charge of the commercial division of Capital Pacific Holdings (CPH). During his tenure at CPH, he oversaw the acquisition and financing of nearly $600 million in assets including mixed-use entitlement parcels, existing office buildings, high-end residential developments, golf course properties, industrial development sites and land for the development of high-end luxury hotels and resorts. In 2001 he formed a spin-off venture, Makar Properties, as a result of an equity buyout of CPH’s commercial division. Prior to CPH, he worked for the New York investment banking firm of McFarland Dewey & Co. Makarechian is a graduate from the University of California, Santa Barbara with degrees in finance and accounting.
A participant and Board Member of several charitable, social and educational institutions, Paul is an active member of the California Coast Chapter of the Young President’s Organization, where he has served as the Chapter Chairman and currently serves as the Regional Networks Officer for the YPO/WPO Executive Committee. He is a founding Board Member and Chairman of Gen Next and is a founding Board Member of Miocean, an Orange County-based nonprofit environmental organization. He has served on the Board of Trustees for South Coast Repertory and on the Board of Governors for Chapman University. He is also an active member of the Urban Land Institute. In addition, he served as a member of the National Advisory Council for the Small Business Administration by Presidential appointment.
